Yeak Loam is a lake
and a popular tourist destination in the Ratanakiri province of north-eastern Cambodia.
Yeak Loam can be reached by bus from Phnom Penh within 12 hours, located
approximately 3 mile (4.8 km) from the provincial capital, Banlung,
the beautiful lake occupies a 4,000-year-old volcanic crater. Due to the lake’s
tremendous depth 48m, its water isexceptionally clean and clear. The lake is
almost perfectly round and measures 0.45 mi (0.72 km) in diameter.
Large trees and rich, lush rain forest, the home of many exotic birds and
parrots, surround the lake. The Yeak Laom Ecotourism Site was
established in 1998 and is now controlled by the local communities themselves.
Visitors can not only explore the incredible volcanic lake in the
middle of a beautiful landscape of mountainous forests but also go swimming in
the cool and clear water or hike through the forest around the lake with an
experienced local guide. The area provides very attractive trekking
tours around the lake and gives visitors the chance to take a refreshing swim
in the hundreds of years old lake. In addition to that visitors can meet ethnic
groups and learn more about their culture, especially about their traditional dancing music
performances and test their
rice wine. Moreover, you visit traditional handicraft
production sites and you can buy local crafts such as baskets, musical
instruments, hand-woven cloths like scarves and much more.
